Artist Statement

S. Hansen is a gender-fluid public artist and zinester. S. holds a BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design in Fine Arts Studio (Interdisciplinary Studies), and was their graduating class’s VanDerlip scholarship winner for the Fine Arts Department.

In the fall of 2023, S. co-founded a DIY publication called Better Homes & Dykes. The quarterly publication brings together “dykes and those who love them” from across Minnesota. BH&D publishes local queer artists and writers who cover everything from laundry care to seasonal astrology. Better Homes and Dykes was awarded a Minnesota Loring Award, for outstanding queer physical media of the year just 6 months into publishing.

Their artistic work revolves around relationships with home, technology, care, and nostalgia. S. has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions locally & internationally and has co-curated gallery shows. They consider BH&D a public artwork but also have a more traditional public art installation on view at Austin-Straubel airport in Green Bay, WI. They also assisted with other public art projects here in the cities.

They were born in Madison, WI, and now live & work in Minneapolis, MN, USA. Outside of their creative interests, you can find S. curled up with their partner and two orange cats.
